Terraria Calamity Mod
This is my perfect game.
As a mod for the game Terraria, Calamity isn’t something that most people would consider its own game that is deserving of a review. I can’t disagree any more with that stance. If there is any game that I can say defines my entire experience as a gamer, Calamity would be it. Calamity takes the base game, Terraria, and almost quintuples the amount of content in it. Calamity is so huge that it could be its own standalone game, and still have the same impact it had on me. Just like my Terraria review, I can’t really say my “after playing this game over an X month period,” line, because, from the time I first played Calamity, I’ve never stopped playing. But I can definitely say with confidence that Calamity is my perfect gaming experience.
That sounds like a very strong statement, and that’s intentional. Take a game that is already in my top three favorite games, and make it better fivefold. That’s what Calamity is to me. It takes the few flaws of Terraria, fixes them, and adds five times the content to the game. It adds many more game modes, hundreds of new enemies, hundreds of new weapons, dozens of new armor and equipment, and most importantly, dozens of new bosses. I mentioned in my Terraria review that the game is a boss rush. Calamity has more than twice as many bosses as Terraria. Every single one has its own unique, amazing theme song that goes with it. I can’t stress enough how good the music of Calamity is. The amazingly talented DM DOKURO wrote songs for all the bosses, plus a few extra ones. Every time I’m fighting a Calamity boss, I’ll tell anyone I’m in a call with to be quiet so I can hear the music. I’ve embarrassed myself multiple times by letting my family hear me singing Roar of the Jungle Dragon in the shower multiple times. It’s seriously amazing, and I can’t commend it enough.
Terraria is a game without much lore in it. It has loose connections to Cthulhu, a monster by H.P. Lovecraft, but for the most part it is without a story. When you’re playing Calamity, there’s not much of a story, either, but there is a large document you can find online about the backstories of every boss and biome. It even ties in some of the regular Terraria biomes and bosses into its lore. I don’t like to give story summaries in these reviews, but I have to say that the story is actually extremely entertaining and interesting. It’s worth noting that the document isn’t even written in the style of a novel. It’s just a list of things, and under each thing is a few paragraphs about its backstory. I actually found these little lore segments so interesting that I decided to rewrite some of them in the style of a short novel. My online profile picture was one of the characters for a long time. I took some of my Terraria and Calamity characters and gave them Dungeons and Dragons-like backstories that fit into the lore of Calamity. The document is worth a read for any Calamity player.
The heart of Calamity is in its many bosses. Every boss has incredible music and an interesting backstory, as I’ve already mentioned. But the cherry on top is that all of them are so much fun. I usually play Calamity on the hardest difficulty, which is called death mode. And it really shows that it’s the hardest difficulty, because I sometimes get stuck on bosses for days at a time, especially the later bosses like Providence, the Profaned Goddess, and the Devourer of Gods. Speaking of the Devourer of Gods, I love that boss so much that I ordered a custom Calamity mousepad with art of the Devourer of Gods on it. It’s right next to my computer right now as I’m typing this. The bosses always have tons of projectiles going all over the screen, and it makes me feel like an absolute master every time I dodge and weave through the countless lasers and fire that the bosses constantly barrage me with. In fact, I love the Devourer of Gods fight so much that I consider it my favorite boss fight in all of gaming. Its story, music, and fight are all top tier. The best part of this all is that the mod isn’t even a finished product yet. It’s been in development for years, and the developers are super active in their community. They have a suggestion box, where players can make suggestions for the mod, and other players vote on them, and if a suggestion gets enough votes, the developers will review it, and it has a good shot of being implemented. I actually got a suggestion implemented into the mod once, which is something I’ll always remember. Every time you’re wearing the Royal Gel and a modded slime passes right through you, you’ll have me to thank.
The weapons in Calamity make the game for me. My favorite class to play is the mage class, because all the different mage weapons are so varied and unique, a quality it does not share with, say, the ranger class, because all of its weapons are mostly the same in play style. I’ve memorized my favorite weapon (Subsuming Vortex), my favorite armor (Bloodflare), and my favorite equipment (Sigil of Calamitas). My friends who play the other classes also have similar favorites to use when they play the game. I mentioned in my Terraria review that I made a mod for Terraria that adds skins for all of my friends who play the game with me. Just for fun, I drew high-quality pictures of those skins, turned them into characters, and made Dungeons and Dragons-like backstories for them, much like I did one of my previous characters. I tied their backstories into the lore of Calamity.
I’ve put time, energy, and my creativity into Calamity, and I am confident that it’s my perfect game. I will play this game forever.
